How to Wash, Care and Revive Your human hair Wig

by AdminMy Store 27 May 2024 0 Comments

Many black women may discover a bag of old wigs and units while sorting through their wig cabinets, some of which haven't been worn in years. Upon inspection, you may find these wigs tangled, matted, and laden with product buildup.

Additionally, you might come across a frontal wig with severely damaged edges, resembling the aftermath of a rodent invasion. When faced with such a dire situation, it's tempting to toss these units away.

However, fear not, my friends! This article will guide you through the process of rejuvenating old, matted wigs and weaves, restoring damaged frontals, and providing valuable tips and tricks for extending the lifespan of your wigs.

Regularly washing your curly wig is essential to maintaining its freshness and natural appearance.

To achieve this, follow these steps:
  • Fill a sink with apple cider vinegar or warm water

Apple cider vinegar, known for its clarifying properties and ability to restore hair's natural pH balance, is favored by many in the natural hair community. It also adds luster and shine to the hair. Begin by detangling the wig as much as possible, then submerge the hair in the water and let it soak for three to five minutes.
  • Add shampoo with hair care ingredients, wash thoroughly

Once soaked, wash the wig with your preferred shampoo, ensuring thorough scrubbing to remove any dust or buildup. Rinse the wig to ensure it is clean.

  • Remove any makeup or glue

Following the shampoo, apply hair conditioner using a baby hair brush, and gently scrub towards the front to eliminate any remaining buildup or residue on the lace. Tips: There are two ways to apply the silicone mix to your hair.

The first method involves applying it like a regular conditioner and detangling the hair while it's coated with the mix. If the wig cannot be detangled with the silicone mix, it may not be made of human hair.

For multiple wigs, opt for the second method:
Fill a bowl with warm water and mix in some hair conditioner. Submerge the wigs in the water to ensure the solution penetrates them, then let them sit for about ten minutes. This method allows for deep conditioning while conserving product. Afterward, allow the product to saturate the hair for optimal results.
  • Rinse thoroughly in cold water to close cuticles

After soaking or conditioning, remove the wig from the mixture and rinse it with cold water. Cold water helps to seal the hair cuticles, leaving your wig looking sleek and shiny. You'll notice a remarkable transformation in your wig's appearance.
  • Squeeze out any excess liquid and dry with a towel

Once rinsed, gently squeeze out any excess water from the wig using a towel. Avoid rubbing or wringing the hair, as this can cause damage. Then, place the wig on a mannequin head or hanger to air dry naturally.
Alternatively, when time is limited and a full wash isn't possible, you can spritz your human hair wig with a mixture of water and conditioner. Just like with natural hair, a touch of moisture helps revitalize curls and restore bounce. This simple step will rejuvenate your wig's curls, leaving them looking fresh and vibrant, mimicking the healthy appearance of naturally dampened curls.
